Hide your BSN and photo on a copy of your ID

Why hide your BSN?

Your citizen service number (BSN) together with a copy of your ID is exactly what a fraudster needs to open accounts or take out subscriptions in your name. The Dutch government advises covering your BSN on every copy of your ID. A landlord doesn't need it either: according to the Dutch Data Protection Authority, a landlord may only ask for a copy of your ID when the contract is prepared, and then with your BSN and passport photo hidden.

Where to find your BSN

On a Dutch passport or ID card, your BSN is the nine-digit number labelled “Persoonsnummer”. On an ID card, check the back as well. Your BSN also appears on payslips and letters from the tax office, so cover it there too before you share them.

How this tool works

  • Your photo is opened in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to us or anyone else.
  • The black boxes are burned into a new copy of the image, so they can't be removed later. We use solid black on purpose: blurring can sometimes be reversed.
  • The new copy leaves out hidden data from your phone's camera, such as the location where the photo was taken.

Prefer an app?

The government's free KopieID app does the same for ID documents and also adds a watermark saying who the copy is for. In your Rentdossier, every document is watermarked for the home it is shared with automatically. See which other documents you need to rent.
