Renting in Austria: documents and your rights
Which documents landlords in Austria usually ask for, what to cover on your ID and payslips, and what they may not ask.
What landlords usually ask for
- Your name and contact details
- Proof of income: usually your last 3 payslips (Lohnzettel) or an employer confirmation
- Sometimes: a credit report and a guarantor
What to cover on your documents
On your ID
Austrian ID cards and passports carry no social insurance number. A landlord can check your ID; a copy is usually only needed for the contract. Cover the machine-readable lines on any copy.
On your payslips
Cover your social insurance number and your bank details on payslips, and never share your e-card: it shows your social insurance number.
What a landlord may not ask for
- More data than the landlord needs to choose a tenant (GDPR)
- Your e-card or social insurance number
- Information about your health, religion or origin
Austria has no specific list for private rentals; the GDPR principle of collecting only what is needed applies.
