Renting in Switzerland: documents and your rights
Which documents landlords in Switzerland usually ask for, what to cover on your ID and payslips, and what they may not ask.
What landlords usually ask for
- On the application form: name, date of birth, address and phone number
- Your approximate annual income, and your type of residence permit if you are not Swiss
- A debt collection register extract (Betreibungsauszug / extrait du registre des poursuites)
- Once you are chosen: an ID copy and proof of income such as payslips
What to cover on your documents
On your ID
Swiss ID cards have no national number to cover. A landlord may ask for an ID copy only once you are chosen and the lease is being drawn up.
On your payslips
Cover your AHV/AVS number and bank details. Payslips are only needed once you are chosen; your income must stay readable.
What a landlord may not ask for
- Your civil status, religion or nationality (only Swiss or not, plus permit type)
- Questions about leasing, loans or wage garnishments
- Keeping applications of people who were not chosen, unless you agreed to a waiting list
