Renting in Greece: documents and your rights

Which documents landlords in Greece usually ask for, what to cover on your ID and payslips, and what they may not ask.

What landlords usually ask for

What to cover on your documents

On your ID

Show your ID rather than sending a copy: Greece's data protection authority says showing it is usually enough. On any copy, cover the Personal Number (ΠΑ) on the back of new ID cards and the machine-readable lines. Your ID and tax number (ΑΦΜ) go into the lease itself, so share them when you sign.

On your payslips

Cover your AMKA, your EFKA registration number (AMA) and your bank account (IBAN). Your income and employer must stay readable.

What a landlord may not ask for

Greece has no official list of documents for private rentals; the GDPR rule of collecting only what is necessary applies. In June 2026 the Hellenic Data Protection Authority told accommodation providers that showing an ID is usually enough and copies should not be kept without a clear legal basis; the same principles apply to landlords.
