Renting in Luxembourg: documents and your rights
Which documents landlords in Luxembourg usually ask for, what to cover on your ID and payslips, and what they may not ask.
What landlords usually ask for
- A copy of your ID card or passport
- Your payslips from the last 3 months, or an employer certificate
- Your employment contract
- Sometimes: a guarantor, or a bank guarantee for the deposit
What to cover on your documents
On your ID
Cover your 13-digit national identification number (matricule) and the machine-readable lines. A private landlord doesn't need them to check who you are.
On your payslips
Your matricule is on your payslips too: cover it, and your bank account number.
What a landlord may not ask for
- More data than the landlord needs to choose a tenant and draw up the lease (GDPR)
- Information about your health, religion or origin
Luxembourg has no specific list of documents for private rentals; the GDPR rule of collecting only what is necessary applies. Public housing bodies may ask for your matricule for their own procedures.
