Renting in the Netherlands: documents and your rights
Which documents landlords in the Netherlands usually ask for, what to cover on your ID and payslips, and what they may not ask.
What landlords usually ask for
- First: your name, contact details and an indication of your income
- As a serious candidate: your last 3 payslips and an employer statement, or proof of enrolment and funds
- When the contract is prepared: a copy of your ID, with your BSN and photo covered
- Often: a signed guarantor statement, and a reference from your current landlord
What to cover on your documents
On your ID
Cover your BSN (citizen service number) and your passport photo. A landlord may only ask for an ID copy when the contract is being prepared.
On your payslips
Your BSN is on your payslips too: cover it.
What a landlord may not ask for
- Bank statements
- A copy of your ID before the contract stage
- Information about your health, religion or origin, or photos of you or your family
